Are meat eaters better athletes than Vegetarians?

A friend at work says he’s been watching this programme on the BBC where Colin Jackson went Veggie:

BBC – The truth about food

I watched the program there with interest and read the articles, for the normal, non-professional athletes there was no actual, provable loss of ability, however the technical stuff interested me more.

The article states:

There are important micronutrients such as iron, creatine and carnosine that are only be found in meat-related products.

Now Iron can be found in vegetarian sources in abundance, however creatine and carnosine don’t appear to be after some initial research, they are available as supplements, but are they vegetarian? Even the nature of the word “carnosine” indicates “carniverous”, so it seems unlikely. So what’s the solution for Vegetarians?
