Looking down past the building into the Balkan Mountains there is a wind farm. Not really a contrast of “old and new” as the monument was only unveiled in 1981, but it certainly felt that way.
In the walls within the towering concrete monument lays a time capsule placed by Todor Zhivkov with messages for the future, but like everything soviet in Bulgaria, it seems to represent something they want to forget.
